/  Blog   /  Have You Heard What Peptides Can Do for Your Skin?

eyecremePeptides are proteins that the body produces and are helpful in skincare in various ways. Peptides are used to heal the skin’s surface, help stimulate cell turnover and can even mimic Botox to help minimize deep set lines.  Peptides are available in skincare products such as moisturizers, eye creams, facial serums and body treatments and there are several key forms of peptides with specific functions.  Since the body recognizes peptides, there is a minimal chance of irritation from use.

What are peptides?

Peptides are both long and short chains of proteins that are often made by linking alpha amino acids in a certain order. The body’s digestion process creates these short-chained molecules to be easily and quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. Since they are easily absorbed, peptides are especially useful for skincare. Some peptides act as hormones, some act neurotransmitters, some assist with the immune system and some deliver copper to the skin.

What is the function of a peptide?

A peptide acts as a “messenger” and communicates to other cells to activate cell turnover. Since peptides are the building blocks of proteins, peptides are especially effective when it comes to skincare.

Peptides can:

·         Signal to the skin to produce more collagen

·         Deliver copper to the skin (copper is a mineral used for healing)

·         Act as neurotransmitters in relaxing furrowing of facial muscles (acting like Botox). A commonly used neuropeptide in skincare is argirline, which can block the contraction of a muscle.

Which products contain peptides?

Facial serums and moisturizers, eye creams, body treatments and even some lip plumpers.intensive_eye

Ones to try: LaVigne Intensive Eye Crème, which contains shea butter, co-enzyme Q10 and palmitoyl tri-peptides, and LaVigne Plump and Firm Tri-Active Peptide Cream, which contains avocado, sunflower and sweet almond oils, glycolic acid and palmitoyl tri-peptide-3 and are good for the face, neck and décolleté.

A brief category and description of peptides

·  Palmitoyl pentaplump_firmpeptide-3: Called the signal peptide and is also known as Matrixyl. This peptide works in the deepest layers of the skin for overall collagen production and to help heal wounds.

·  Acetylhexapeptide 3: Helps to relax some facial muscles to prevent wrinkles, mimics the function of Botox.

·  Palmitoyl oligopeptide: Works similar to how the palmitoyl pentapeptide-3 works. This peptide stimulates collagen and hyaluronic acid production to work in the deep layers of skin. Also, this peptide acts as a mild UV protective agent to help prevent skin damage.

·  Copper peptide: Acts as an antioxidant to help to heal epidermal wounds but usually not advised for anti-wrinkle by dermatologists.

Are peptides okay to use for sensitive skin?

Since the body recognizes peptides as proteins, there less chance of an allergic reaction. Peptides are recommended by dermatologists to help with wound healing, cell turnover and thickening the skin barrier.

I didn’t realize that peptides signal the skin to produce more collagen. It is no wonder that they work so well! I will have to make sure that I get some products with peptides so I don’t have to worry about wrinkles.
